Venice looks very Interesting

Rick Steve's Italian Cities

Since Esther and I love the water and are water babies, plus I love Amsterdam and Esther loved Lindau on our last trip, we are looking hard at Venice.  We watch a Rick Steve’s travel video last night on European cities and loved the Venice chapter.  Our boys even want to go now.  So I will be researching some more on a Venice stop on this trip.  If you have any Venice tips please comment and reply.  Thanks Steve Parker.

Esther’s First Travel Plan

Steve and Esther on the Rhine

Dinner on the Rhine 1993

I ordered a few travel books from Amazon last night and two arrived today.  One of the books is a 1994 version of the Rick Steves’ travel guide  book we used in 1993; 2 to 22 Days in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  Esther took a day off today and after leafing through the book, we started talking about the vacation trip back to Germany and Europe.

We figured a 3 week trip would cost about $10k;

  1. $2k for flights
  2. $2k for hotels
  3. $2k for food
  4. $2k for Car rentals / Trains
  5. $1k for spending money
  6. $1k for Gas and Gifts

This budget is very rough but probably close.

Esther said she wants to visit Holland because I talk about it all the time.  She thinks Paris would be fun and Italy would be cool.  She also wants to go back to Lindau on Lake Constance in Barvaria.  Lindau might be her favorite German town we visited on our 1993 honeymoon trip.  Esther would also like to go to London.  I would also like to go back to London.  I got to go to London for my job so Esther wants to do London.

We found a cool website that has a map and distance calculator between major European Cities.  So we started looking at cities and a possible route based on 2 to 3 hour driving trips.

  1. Amsterdam / Delft
  2. Brussels / Bruge
  3. Paris / Train to London and back
  4. Luxembourg
  5. Frankfurt / Rhine
  6. Stuttgart / Ettal
  7. Munich / Lindau
  8. Zurich / Train to Venice and back

This might be too much for 21 days but its a good start.  I am really intrigued by Venice.

1993 Honeymoon Trip to Germany

Germany Map used on HoneymoonToday, I dug out all of our 1993 Germany travel planning books and honeymoon pictures.  Before the honeymoon trip, I put together a 25 page itinerary that we used as a guide in Germany and I also made extra copies for our parents.  I can’t believe a hard copy was still in our wedding box.  I remember Esther was worried that I had not planned the honeymoon, and then I showed her the booklet.  Now she can read the blog about our upcoming trip

The map on the left is the first page of our 1993 itinerary.  I think its a blown up page from a Rick Steve’s travel guide book.  Maybe?  In 1994, I loaned the book to a friend when I was working at EDS and never got it back.  So if its you, and you’re reading my blog, please return it to me.  :)

Our honeymoon flight landed in Frankfurt and we stayed on the Rhine our first two nights.  For the next 8 days, we drove a BMW down from the Rhine and across Germany on the Romantic Road to Switzerland and flew out of Zurich.  For our first and last night’s stays, we had reservations in a hotel on the Rhine and at a Hilton in Zurich.  But, for all other nights in Germany we drove to a city, found the information center, and called hotels and found places to stay.  We tried to get into a city before 5pm, so we could find a place to stay.  We never ran into an issue and the spontaneity along with the surprise of where we were going to stay that night was very exciting and gave us a lot to talk about during the drives from destinations.

Stay tuned as I write more about our 1993 trip and what will are planning for 2013.

Planning our trip starts with the blog

Ok, so our Germany trip is starting with this blog and adding in affiliate links to help us pay for our trip.  Once I write more articles and increase the traffic I will add the affiliate links.  I am hoping since travel is expensive that we can at least pay for one airline ticket from the website.  It would be nice to partner with maybe a car rental agency and get the car free for a month.  We would really like to rent a large BMW or Mercedes for our trip around Northern Europe; Germany, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland and Austria.  I traveled these countries when I was working for EDS back in the mid 1990′s.

Our Germany Vacation 2013

Esther and I went to Germany for our honeymoon in September 1993.  We are planning to return to Germany 2013 for our 20 year anniversary.  This is our blog documenting our 1993 trip and the one we are planning for 2013.  Right now, we are thinking about going with Esther’s sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Brad.   They have never been to Europe, so it will be exciting for us to be their tour guides and introduce them to Germany, BeNeLux and maybe Switzerland and France.  I would like to spend at least 3 weeks on this special vacation if not one month.  I am thinking our budget will be at least $5k or more.  I really don’t want to worry about money when I am there.  I want this to be the trip of a lifetime.
